Bruce Greenberg Hosts Study Session On Early Lionel Steamers

by Jim Kelly-Evans

It's been about 17 years since the publication of the revised edition of Greenberg's Guide To Lionel Trains 1901 - 1942, Volume 1, Standard and 2-7/8" Gauge. The author, Bruce C. Greenberg, Ph.D., feels that it's time for another update. In order to begin the process of updating the volume, Bruce hosted a study seminar at his home in Alexandria, VA. on January 14, 2012 focusing on early Lionel steam engines: No's. 5, 5 Special, 51, 6, 6 Special, & 7.

A number of collectors were invited to bring specimens from their collections for evaluation.

Bruce developed a data collection form to be used to record the various characteristics of each locomotive and tender.

Participants at the session split up into teams and examined the various examples while recording details about each item including distinguishing characteristics as well as detailed dimensional measurements.

As the study session progressed, Bruce began the process of photographing known original specimens for possible inclusion in a future publication.

Bruce plans to compile the information garnered at the study session and provide a summary of the findings to the participants. Another study session focusing on early Lionel electric outline locomotives is scheduled in Alexandria, VA. for March 4, 2012.
